FAQs

What age groups does the studio teach?

Boston Harp Studio welcomes students ages 7 through adulthood. Whether you're a young beginner, a teen pursuing advanced musical goals, or an adult fulfilling a lifelong dream, lessons are thoughtfully tailored to your age, experience, and aspirations.

There is no "perfect" age to begin; only the right time for you to start your harp journey.

How often and how long are lessons?

Weekly lessons are recommended for most students, as consistent instruction provides the strongest foundation for steady progress and long-term musical growth. Lessons are offered in 30-, 45-, and 60-minute formats, with the appropriate length determined by each student's age, experience, and goals.

For beginners, a 30-minute lesson is typically the best place to start. As students advance and repertoire becomes more complex, many choose to transition to 45- or 60-minute lessons to allow for deeper exploration of technique and musicianship.

Do I need my own harp? Do I need to bring a harp to lessons?

Students are expected to have access to a harp at home, along with a bench and music stand, to support regular practice. However, there is no need to bring your instrument to your lesson. Boston Harp Studio provides both a full-size pedal harp and a lever harp for students to use during instruction.

For most beginners, renting a harp is the best place to start. It allows you to begin learning on a quality instrument without the commitment of purchasing one. If you're unsure which harp is right for you, I'm happy to help guide you through the rental and purchasing process.

How are lessons structured?

Lessons are designed around the student, not the method book. We believe meaningful progress comes from understanding how each individual learns and creating an environment where they feel both challenged and supported.

Each lesson balances technical development, artistic expression, and musical understanding while adapting to the student's evolving goals and interests. Whether a student is preparing for auditions or simply learning for personal enjoyment, instruction is always thoughtful, and personalized.

Can I take lessons in-person and online?

Yes! BHS offers both in-person lessons at our Belmont studio and online lessons via Google Meets.

For beginners, we recommend starting with a few in-person lessons to establish healthy posture, hand position, and foundational technique through direct guidance and real-time feedback. Once fundamentals are in place, many students choose to supplement their learning with online lessons or transition to a hybrid schedule that best fits their needs.

Do I need to know how to read music?

Not at all! We welcome students with no prior musical experience. Whether you've never played an instrument or read a single note of music, we'll guide you step by step in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Music reading is introduced gradually alongside harp technique, and you'll receive the tools and resources you need to build confidence and become a fluent musician over time.

What People Are Saying

"Ms. Ting is an amazing teacher, who makes playing the harp approachable. It feels easy to ask her questions and she has supported my learning every step of the way — often going above and beyond my expectations. "

— Kira C., Student, Age 12

“Thank you so much for everything you do for your students! Thank you for your support in making them feel ready and excited for their first piano recital performance. I think your way of teaching is wonderful! It lets students take ownership of their responsibility. The point of the recital is not only just about performing, but also learning what it means to be committed to something and be able to stand in front of an audience for oneself.”

— Angela L., Parent

“Ting is an excellent instructor who takes the time to clearly explain harp technique in a way that is thoughtful and easy to understand. I especially appreciate her approach to setting practice goals. It makes a big difference for someone like me with a busy schedule. She is very specific about what to practice, how to practice it, and how much time to spend, which makes practicing feel structured without ever feeling overwhelming.”

— Mary H., Student, Adult
